Observational exercise: Documenting landscape gradient change. Refreshment stop in Morogoro.

Park Entry & Camp Orientation

Check-in at park gate. Transfer to partner lodge for brief orientation and luggage drop.

Main Gate. Camp: Vuma Hills Tented Camp (or similar academic partner).

Field Session I: Transect Training

Practical Exercise: Introduction to road transect sampling. Drive a predetermined route, recording all mammal sightings by species, number, distance, and activity. Focus on data collection protocol.

Buffet lunch at lodge with panoramic views. Initial data collation and discussion of challenges (visibility bias, animal movement).

Field Session II: Ethogram Focus

Practical Exercise: Selecting a target animal (e.g., giraffe, elephant herd). Using an ethogram sheet, record behavioral states (feeding, moving, socializing, resting) at 2-minute intervals for 30 minutes. Analyze time-budget.

Field Session IV: Aquatic Ecosystem Study

Visit to Mkata River “Hippo Pools.” Behavioral observation of hippopotamus pods and Nile crocodiles. Discussion on riparian zone ecology and keystone species.
